Icy Powerlines Keweenaw Michigan Upper Peninsula Late January 2021 Backcountry Snowmobiling
What a day! Hit some power lines coming out of Toivola in the Keweenaw (Upper Peninsula of Michigan) and man did we run into some challenges. Hit a series of 3 very steep, icy hills in a row that had us covering probably 300 yards over the course of 2 hours. We ran into a guy on a Timbersled who helped us on the first hill, and then disappeared off into the woods for a bit while we proceeded to get stuck on another hill. Once he reappeared, not being able to find a better route through the woods, he was in the same boat as us, stuck trying to get up an icy hill with lots of sun exposure and everyone kept sliding back down. Eventually one by one we got some guys up and over with the help of a strap, paracord and then finally a local showed up with a nice thick piece of synthetic rope that he had knots tied into every 6' or so which helped us get the last guy up the final hill. Unfortunately we didn't get much of this on video due to it being so hectic the whole time. And then to top things off, I lost my phone for an hour and a half toward the end of the day under 8" of snow. We ended up being able to centralize the area it was in by driving around the woods and trying to connect to the bluetooth with my Polaris PIDD gauge and then an hour of digging. Overall it was a great day full of memories and we did find my phone!
